Building Furniture With PVC Pipes

What is PVC Pipe?

PVC pipes are a type of plastic water pipe that is used in underground piping systems by a great majority because it is resistant to rust and a lot of the normal wear and tear associated with piping systems. It is made of a polyvinyl chloride material and can be purchased usually in black or white, although it is a lot more popular and much more readily available in white.

Why is PVC Pipe So Great for Building?

Because PVC pipe is so sturdy and resilient, and can resist the wear and tear of the elements a lot better than other materials many people use PVC for things other than transporting water. PVC is used by crafters and builders far and wide, as it is fairly inexpensive, easily cut, able to be glued easily and able to be painted. It is used for a variety of things, from sports racks to outdoor greenhouses, to kids’ water guns. You may have seen these things before, but have you ever considered the benefits of PVC pipes for building furniture?

If you are one of those people who like to build things, either for your own personal use or for a profit, you might want to consider PVC pipes as a building material for your small carpentry endeavors. PVC water pipes are especially good for building lawn furniture or pool and patio furniture, as it is waterproof and weather resistant.

Don’t Think You Have What It Takes?

Don’t think you have the carpentry skills necessary for building such things as furniture with PVC pipes? Well, if you ever played with K’Nex, Tinker Toys, or Legos, you should be able to build furniture with PVC pipes--it’s easy. They come with connector pieces and end pieces, so it is just a matter of reading and being able to follow directions, or have a little imagination of your own. If you are lacking in all of these areas, then you may have a problem with this type of project.

Where Can I Get PVC Pipes From?

You can purchase PVC pipes in desired lengths from your local hardware store, or just cut the pieces yourself with a jigsaw when you’re ready and know what lengths you need your pieces to be in. Most places sell it for less than a dollar for five feet, and even cheaper if you buy it in bulk for your larger projects. Talk to your sales associate about what your desire to build furniture with the PVC water pipes and they should be able to direct you to the correct grade of PVC as there are a few different varieties available for you to choose from.

As PVC piping has become more popular for non-traditional uses, companies have even developed furniture-grade PVC for building use. The main difference between this and more traditional PVC pipes is that it is designed to even further withstand the pressure and weathering of the elements, and resists chipping and fading even more. Also, it is designed to hold more in weight than traditional PVC, so if you can find it, furniture-grade PVC is an option for your use, although it is a bit more expensive.
