Make A PVC Piggy Bank With Your Kids

Kids have the best kinds of minds there are; they are fresh and new and are always waiting for and seeking knowledge and information to fill their brains. For this same reason, they are always needing to be entertained and wanting things to do to keep them busy. If your kids are like an other kids, they would probably much rather devote their energy to climbing a tree, playing on the railroad tracks, and running the streets than they are interested in drawing a picture or reading a book. Kids have the type of minds that needc to be stimulated, and for this reason when they are unable to do these outdoorsy things they tend to get bored very easily.

For rainy days in when the kids are antsy and you are on a budget, consider keeping them busy with a craft project. PVC pipes are great for kids art projects as they are not easily damaged, are widely available for purchase, and can withstand a great deal of wear and tear. Just to keep their interest, try and gear their projects toward things they can use in their everyday lives. One of the easiest projects you can make with your kids using PVC pipes is a plain and simple piggy bank.

Kids can always use a piggy bank! Piggy banks are great for kids because they encourage savings, and the kids are able to see how the change they have can add up to money they can actually use. The kids can eventually break the piggy bank and spend the money on something special, so it helps them to learn the value of money.

Piggy banks are easily assembled, and they can be made so they are easily opened, or made where they have to be sawed open. Either way, you want to buy about six inches of PVC pipe that is fairly wide, and two end pieces--one for each end. Using craft glue, fasten one connector piece to one end of the PVC pipe, to make a sort of cup. Pre-cut a slit in the end of the other fastener, just wide enough to slip a nickel through. If you want to be able to take the top off of the piggy bank, simply fasten that connector end and if not, put some glue on the inside of the connector piece so the top cannot be taken off. After both pieces are fastened, the kids can paint the outside of their piggy bank with whatever designs they want, and decorate it to their taste. After the paint dries, they can start saving!

Of course the bank is going to have to be opened someday. Either the bank will start filling up or your child will get impatient. If you glued the top onto the bank, simply saw the bank with a jigsaw to get the money out. Of course, this destroys the bank so be sure to remind your child that their bank wont last forever if they decide they want their top glued on.
