Building With PVC Pipes--For Kids!
In the days of Playstation, Xbox, I-Pods and Razor Scooters keeping kids entertained indoors without the use of the television isn’t an easy thing. There comes a point in a child’s life when coloring and drawing pictures, or building things with Lego’s or building blocks, or even playing board games is no longer an amusing option for them, and certainly not enough entertainment to keep them out of your hair while you try to work, clean up the house, or prepare a meal for the family.
So what to do in the days of these newfangled videogames and other technology, when getting into trouble isn’t the same as it used to be? Kids need to keep entertained, and while it isn’t always the parent’s responsibility to make sure they are occupied it certainly is nice to have the peace of mind knowing that your kids are peacefully engaged in some play or project to keep them out of trouble and out of your hair.
PVC pipe is an excellent and affordable option for kids’ projects. There are a few reasons why it serves as such an excellent craft material for kids, but the main reasons are because the material is so durable and inexpensive, perfect for kids! PVC pipe costs less than a dollar a foot. PVC pipes can be purchased with end cap pieces and corner pieces for easy toy-like assembly, and it can even be found in different colors. The most commonly found PVC pipes are in white or black, but since more and more people have begun using the material for non-water transportation related endeavors companies are starting to produce them in more colors, although they may be a bit harder to come by.
So what types of kids’ projects can be made with PVC pipes? Well, tons of things! Have your child assemble a sports rack for all of their equipment. This will get you, as the parent, out of their hair about leaving their things in the front hallway or in the middle of the floor, and it will give your children something to work on for a long time, that will keep them busy and out of your hair. The sports rack is built making multiple levels of a rectangle, connected with four corner pieces. The rectangle can be as long as you need it to be, depending on how much equipment it will be used to store, but it has to be wide enough so that y our smallest soccer balls, basketballs, and the like will not fall through the middle.
Another largely popular kids’ project is a marshmallow gun, also called a marshmallow shooter. Marshmallow shooters are best for summer days spent outside and camping trips, or trips to the beach. The marshmallow shooters usually require that you blow through them to make the marshmallows shoot out. For younger kids who don’t quite know how to control their saliva, this can be a pretty sticky mess, so while the project can be done indoors, the end result is usually best done outdoors, away from carpet, furniture, and you!
