Pamper Your Plants With A PVC Greenhouse

PVC water pipes are used in a variety of ways. They are usually used for transporting water underground, a more suitable alternative to plain metal pipes with less of a tendency to rust and rot. PVC is made of plastic and vinyl, and so it is extremely resistant to everyday wear and tear as it is made to be out in the elements.

All of the properties that make PVC pipes ideal for transporting water are what makes it ideal for other uses. PVC is now used to make patio furniture, soccer nets, and outdoor structures. It is strong and durable and can even be painted if necessary. It has all of the qualities of other great building materials, so why not put it to work?

One of the more clever uses of PVC pipes is in building an outdoor greenhouse for plants. Many people do use the PVC pipes for this in lieu of wood greenhouse kits or other prefab kits out there because of the simplicity of it. It consists of connecting long pieces of pvc into a center rod, with cross pieces coming out from the middle bar at set intervals to make a series of right angles. The PVC pipe pieces are bent to form a U shape and fastened into the ground, creating the skeleton of the structure.

Many of you are probably wondering what it is that is so great about PVC pipe greenhouses in comparison to more conventional ways of constructing a greenhouse. PVC pipes in construction have a lot of benefits over other more commonly used building materials; they possess qualities that are important to different people for different reasons.

Some people choose to use PVC because it is lightweight, and wood and nails is not always as easy a way of building things to some people as it is to others. Building with PVC involves simple glue and screws, and fitting pieces together like children’s construction sets.

Still others choose to use PVC for their greenhouses because they don’t have a lot of space, or they have too much space. Pre-made greenhouse kits don’t always come in the right sizes, but using PVC allows you to make the greenhouse as big--or as small--as you need it to be, depending on the measurements of the pieces of pipe you are using. The ribs, or the crosspieces on your structure, should be half the size of how wide you want your greenhouse to be, and the middle section, to which crosspieces are fashioned, should be a series of shorter pipe pieces that are connected with four-way fasteners, to connect the ribs. Connecting the ribs to the middle support beam is the most complicated piece of construction involved in building a PVC greenhouse.

If you’re thinking of constructing a greenhouse for your plants from PVC water pipes, you’re in good company. It’s a fairly simple construction project that can be done by just about anyone, and it is easily taken down in the winter and stored in pieces in a basement or a garage, just by removing a screw. What could be better for your garden needs, not to mention your budget, than a PVC greenhouse?
